Walsh grabs first-ever conference championship
RIO GRANDE, Ohio (4.26.2003) - Walsh won its
first-ever conference track & field title by taking the AMC Championship at
the University of Rio Grande. The Cavaliers, who have been members of the
league since 1976, had 171 points to outdistance defending champion Malone, who
finished with 137 points.
Walsh's Dan McCallion was tabbed AMC Coach of
the Year while the Cavs' Derek Besgrove was voted the Outstanding Performer of
the Meet honors. He won the 200 meter dash (21.71), finished 2nd in the 100
(10.86), and was part of the winning 4 x 100 meter relay unit (43.08).
Two new AMC records were set. Ricky Harris of
Roberts Wesleyan established a new mark in the 110 meter high hurdles with a
time of 14.30 seconds. Geneva's Matt Brown also broke the javelin record with a
heave of 192-feet 3-inches.
