Geneva wins first AMC title
RIO GRANDE, Ohio (4.26.2003) - Geneva captured
the AMC women's track & field championship with 157 points while four-time
defending champion Malone was the runner-up with 134 points. It's the first AMC
title in any sport for the Golden Tornadoes, who joined the league in 1998.
Geneva's Bret Otte was named the AMC Coach of the Year.
Tiffin's Sara Riley was voted the Outstanding
Performer of the Meet. She won the hammer throw with an AMC record toss of
166-feet 1-inch, took 1st place in the javelin (124-6.50), was 2nd in the
discus (135-3), and placed 3rd in the shot put (41-0).
Five other AMC women's records fell during the
meet and another was set in a new event. Houghton's Sarah Gardner established a
new mark in the 100 meter hurdles in 14.60 seconds and Houghton also broke the
4 x 800 meter relay time (9:34.44). Other new records came from Notre Dame's
Petra Munroe in the 100 meter dash (12.32), Malone's Tiffany French in the shot
put (43-6.25), and Cedarville's Rachael Castro in the pole vault (11-0). Sarah
Roberts, also of Cedarville, won the first running of the women's 3,000 meter
steeplechase in 11:12.77.
