2004 Players of the Week

Jason Irish, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (position)

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene outfielder Jason Irish (Cortland, OH)
and Rio Grande pitcher Dustin Gibbs (Vinton, OH) have been selected the AMC
baseball Players of the Week.
Irish, a 6-foot-2 senior, led MVNU to a 2-1
week including a sweep of their AMC playoff qualifier series with Walsh. He
batted .545 with a double, two home runs, and seven RBI's. Irish was 3-for-4 at
the plate in a 4-2 loss at NCAA Division I Wright State.
Gibbs, a 6-foot-4 righthander, tossed a
complete-game three-hitter in Rio's 8-0 win at Point Park in the deciding game
of the AMC playoff qualifier. He struck out seven and walked one.

Angel Lopez, Ohio Dominican (position)
Brad Hubert, Walsh (pitcher)
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Ohio Dominican shortstop Angel Lopez (Cidra, Puerto Rico)
and Walsh pitcher Brad Hubert (Brunswick, OH) are the AMC baseball Players of
the Week.
Lopez, a 5-foot-10 junior, batted .563 during
Ohio Dominican's 4-1 week. He hit safely in all five games while going 9-for-16
with three doubles, a home run, six RBI's, and nine runs scored. Lopez had one
stolen base, two walks, and a .938 slugging percentage.
Hubert, a six-foot junior lefthander, tossed
the first perfect game in Walsh baseball history during a 6-0 victory over AMC
North Division leader Saint Vincent. He struck out six while facing the minimum
21 batters.

Dan Matheney, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (position)
Nick Schwartz, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (pitcher)
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene teammates Dan Matheney (New Concord,
OH) and Nick Schwartz (Sunbury, OH) have been selected the AMC baseball Players
of the Week after pacing the Cougars to a 5-2 week.
Matheney, a six-foot senior infielder, hit .538
with a home run and seven runs scored. He had four 3-hit games, one 2-hit
performance, and handled 36 fielding chances without an error.
Schwartz, a 6-6 sophomore righthander, was 2-0
with a 0.64 ERA. He fanned 15 batters in 14 innings pitched without a walk.

Justin Clarey, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (position)
Matthew Bonin, Cedarville University (pitcher)
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene catcher Justin Clarey (Columbus, OH)
and Cedarville pitcher Matthew Bonin (Patton, PA) are the AMC baseball Players
of the Week.
Clarey, a 6-foot-3 senior, batted .611 to lead
NAIA No. 20 MVNU to a 5-1 week. He had 11 hits in 18 at bats with a double, two
home runs, and seven RBI's. Clarey hit safely in all six games including four
contests of at least two hits.
Bonin, a six-foot lefthander, tossed a
complete-game four-hitter in a 3-1 Cedarville victory at NAIA No. 20 Mount
Vernon Nazarene. He struck out four batters and walked two.

Traelic Cotter, Point Park University (position)
Mike Laughlin, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (pitcher)
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Point Park first baseman Traelic Cotter (Maine, NY) and
Mount Vernon Nazarene pitcher Mike Laughlin (Mogadore, OH) have been selected
the AMC baseball Players of the Week.
Cotter, a 6-foot-3 senior, batted .500 to lead
the Pioneers to a 5-1 week. He recorded eight hits in 16 at bats with four
doubles, three homers, and nine RBI's. Cotter posted a 1.313 slugging
percentage and also walked six times.
Laughlin, a 6-4 freshman righthander, was 2-0
with one save and a 1.20 ERA during MVNU's 5-1 week. He struck out seven and
allowed just two hits in a 6-0 win at Tiffin. Laughlin got the save in a 7-5
win at NAIA No. 13 Ohio Dominican and then tossed a complete game in a 4-3 win
over ODU with five K's and no walks. For the week, he allowed two earned runs
in 15 innings on seven hits with 13 strikeouts and three walks.

Arnaldo Rodriguez, Ohio Dominican University (position)
Joe Martinson, Point Park College (pitcher)
CEDARVILLE, Ohio -
Ohio Dominican third baseman Arnaldo Rodriguez (Cidra, Puerto Rico) and Point
Park pitcher Joe Martinson (Pason, UT) are the AMC baseball Players of the
Week.
Rodriguez, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, batted .444 to
lead NAIA No. 14 Ohio Dominican to a 4-1 week. He tallied eight hits in 18 at
bats with three doubles, three homers, and 11 RBI. In a 17-run inning during
the Panthers' 20-3 win at Cedarville, Rodriguez led off the frame with a homer,
doubled and scored, and capped the inning off with a grand slam.
Martinson, a 6-4 junior righthander, struck out
nine in Point Park's 6-1 complete-game victory at Walsh. He allowed an earned
run on four hits and walked one.

Charlie Kabealo, Rio Grande (position)
Jonathan Sanchez, Ohio Dominican (pitcher)
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Rio Grande outfielder Charlie Kabealo (Rockbridge, OH) and
Ohio Dominican pitcher Jonathan Sanchez (Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico) have been
selected the AMC baseball Players of the Week. Sanchez was also selected the
NAIA National Pitcher of the Week.
Kabealo, a 6-foor-1 junior, batted .615 during
Rio's 6-0 week including four AMC South Division victories against Cedarville.
He tallied eight hits in 13 at bats with a double, a home run, and four RBI's.
Kabealo scored six runs and hit safely in all five games in which he played.
Sanchez, a 6-3 senior lefthander, hurled
back-to-back complete-game shutouts for NAIA No. 22 Ohio Dominican. He tossed a
two-hitter in a 6-0 win versus Urbana in which he struck out a school-record 16
batters with just one walk. Sanchez came back with nine strikeouts and no walks
in a 1-0, four-hit victory at Tiffin.

Tim Sutton, University of Rio Grande (pitcher)
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene first baseman/outfielder Jason Irish
(Cortland, OH) and Rio Grande pitcher Tim Sutton (Wheelersburg, OH) are the AMC
baseball Players of the Week.
Irish, a 6-foot-2 senior, batted .562 to lead
MVNU to a 3-2 week. He hit safely in all five games with 9 hits in 16 at bats.
He recorded two doubles, two homers, eight RBI's, and five runs scored to go
along with a 1.062 slugging percentage.
Sutton, a 5-9 senior, was 2-0 on the mound and
did not allow a run in either appearance. He got the win in relief of an 11-0
victory over Harris-Stowe allowing one hit in 4 1/3 innings with three
strikeouts and a walk. Sutton came back three days later and started another
11-0 win versus Harris Stowe in which he allowed one hit in five innings with
three K's and two walks.

Brian Budd, Walsh University (position)
Mike Laughlin, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (pitcher)
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh second baseman Brian Budd (Orrville, OH) and Mount
Vernon Nazarene pitcher Mike Laughlin (Mogadore, OH) have been named the AMC
baseball Players of the Week. They are the first athletes chosen for the 2004
season.
Budd, a six-foot senior, batted .706 as Walsh
split a four-game series with Shawnee State. He was 12-for-17 at the plate with
a double, seven RBI's, and four runs scored. Budd posted a .765 slugging
percentage and registered at least two hits in all four games.
Laughlin, a 6-4 freshman righthander, fanned 10
batters in his first collegiate start and tossed a two-hitter in a 10-0 win
versus Ohio State-Newark. He walked just one batter in six innings.
