2003-04 Players of the Week


(February 22-28)
Kenny Roberts, Saint Vincent College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Saint Vincent guard Kenny Roberts (Falling Waters, WV) has been selected the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. He averaged 21.3 points and five assists to lead the Bearcats to three straight wins and the AMC/NAIA Qualifying Tournament championship.

Roberts, a six-foot junior, opened the week with seven points and five assists as Saint Vincent rallied in the final minute for a 71-68 win versus Shawnee State. He racked up 28 points and six assists in a 71-68 semifinal victory against Geneva before totaling 29 points and four assists in a 100-91 overtime decision over Ohio Dominican in the final.

For the week, Roberts shot 52 percent from the field overall, made 8-of-14 outside the arc for 57 percent, and was 10-for-12 at the line for 83 percent. He added seven rebounds and five steals.

Kharmen Wingard, Daemen College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Daemen guard Kharmen Wingard (Buffalo, NY) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-1 junior led the Wildcats to two victories and the outright North Division title.

Wingard pumped in 28 points in an 87-72 win versus Malone. He finished with 28 points during a 94-76 decision against 2nd-place Seton Hill.

For the week, Wingard made 20-of-33 shots overall for 61 percent and 11-of-19 three-pointers for 58 percent. He was 2-for-2 at the charity with three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Ales Chan, Seton Hill University
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Seton Hill center Ales Chan (Prague, Czech Republic) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 7-foot-2 senior averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds, 8 blocks, and 4 assists to lead the Griffins to two victories.

Chan opened his week with a triple-double consisting of 26 points, 15 rebounds, and an AMC-record 12 blocked shots in a 78-66 win versus Notre Dame. He had 14 points, 11 boards, four blocks, and four assists in a 60-58 victory at Geneva.

Chan shot 46 percent from the field in the two games. He made 14-of-20 free throws for 70 percent.

Jason Lee, Houghton College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Houghton guard Jason Lee (Buffalo, NY) has been selected the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 22.5 points per game to lead the Highlanders to victory over the top two teams in the North Division.

Lee scored 13 points and handed out four assists in a 75-73 win over NAIA Division II No. 24 Daemen. He poured in a career-high 32 points as Houghton rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to stun Saint Vincent, 82-66.

Lee made 16-of-22 shots from the field for 73 percent in the two games. He converted 4-of-6 attempts outside the arc and was 9-for-12 at the line for 75 percent. Lee added six assists, two rebounds, and a blocked shot.

Paul Benjamin, Notre Dame College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Notre Dame forward Paul Benjamin (Cleveland, OH) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-4 forward produced back-to-back double-doubles while averaging 22.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.

Benjamin recorded 18 points, including the game-winning field goal with 1.9 seconds left, and 12 rebounds in a 56-55 victory over NAIA Division II No. 14 Saint Vincent. He also had 27 points and 13 boards in a 94-92 overtime setback at Roberts Wesleyan.

Benjamin, who has posted six straight double-doubles, shot 63 percent from the field and 69 percent at the charity stripe. He added three assists, one block, and one steal.

Jason Weakley, Cedarville University
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville guard Jason Weakley (Worthington, OH) has been named the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. He led the NAIA Division II No. 19 Yellow Jackets to three road victories by averaging 21.3 points and 4.7 assists.

Weakley, a 5-foot-11 junior, scored a career-high 29 points with six rebounds and four assists in a 103-90 win at Urbana. He made all 13 of his free throws including 10 in the final 1:15 of the game.

Weakley netted nine points, which included the 1,000th of his career, with six assists in a 110-74 victory at Wilberforce. He finished his week with 26 points and four assists during a 102-89 decision at Malone. It was the Jackets' first win at Malone since 1986 and ended a 12-game losing streak in Canton.

In the three games, Weakley shot 70.4 percent from the field overall and connected on 9-of-14 three-pointers for 64.3 percent. He was 17-for-17 at the charity stripe to go along with eight rebounds, three steals, and a blocked shot.

Jason Hess, Malone College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Malone center Jason Hess (Ashland, OH) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-7 senior averaged 18.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game while leading the Pioneers to three AMC South Division victories.

Hess registered 17 points and 14 rebounds in a 107-82 win versus Urbana; 24 points with nine boards in a 78-59 victory over Walsh; and 15 points and 13 rebounds during a 77-70 overtime victory against Shawnee State.

For the week, Hess shot .576 from the field and made 18-of-24 free throws for a .750 accuracy. He added seven steals, five assists, and one blocked shot.

Tony Washam, Saint Vincent College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Saint Vincent guard Tony Washam (New Castle, DE) has been chosen the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week for the second straight time. He led the NAIA Division II No. 8 Bearcats to three AMC North Division victories by averaging 27.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.

Washam, a 6-foot-7 junior, scored 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to go along with 4 assists and 6 steals in a 88-66 victory at Geneva. He had 30 points with 8 boards in a 74-70 win versus Roberts Wesleyan. He finished his week with 22 points and 6 rebounds during a 87-39 win over Houghton.

Washam shot 46.4 percent from the field overall, hit 4-of-12 three-pointers, and made 61.9 percent of his free throws. He added 11 steals, 7 assists, and 2 blocked shots.

Tony Washam, Saint Vincent College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Saint Vincent guard Tony Washam (New Castle, DE) has been selected the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week.

Washam, a 6-foot-7 junior, scored 36 points to lead the Bearcats to an 83-79 overtime victory at Rio Grande. He made 13-of-23 shots from the field, was 5-of-11 outside the arc, and hit 5-of-8 free throws. He added five rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and three steals.

Haze Massey, Ohio Dominican University
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Ohio Dominican forward Haze Massey (Lorain, OH) has been chosen the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. He averaged 23.3 points in three games and was selected to the all-tournament squad while leading the Panthers to a runner-up finish at the Saint Xavier Tournament.

Massey, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, poured in 36 points, including a 9-for-11 effort behind the three-point line, in a 94-89 overtime win versus NAIA Division I No. 11 Saint Xavier. He scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in an 80-73 overtime semifinal victory against Aquinas. He had 14 points in an 89-67 setback to Master's in the final.

For the week, Massey made 61.5 percent of his field goals overall and drained 15-of-21 three-pointers for 71.4 percent. He shot 70 percent at the line and added 14 rebounds, six assists, one block, and one steal.

Andy Dunn, Mount Vernon Nazarene University
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene guard Andy Dunn (Hamilton, OH) has been named the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week.

Dunn, a 6-foot-1 guard, scored 25 points to lead the Cougars to a 72-66 overtime win at Rio Grande in their AMC South Division opener. He made 9-of-15 shots from the field, including three treys, and hit all four of his free throws. He added two rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal.

Dunn tallied 21 points in the second half alone to help MVNU rally from an early 15-1 deficit. It was just the third time the Cougars have ever won at Rio.

Darnell Jackson, Daemen College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Daemen forward Darnell Jackson (York, PA) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. He helped the Wildcats open North Division play with a 90-79 victory over NAIA Division II No. 12 Saint Vincent.

Jackson, a 6-foot-6 junior, scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win. He made 11-of-14 shots from the field overall for 78.6 percent, hit 1-of-3 three-pointers, and converted both of his free throws. Jackson added two steals, two blocks, and an assist.

(November 23-29)
Tim Sawyer, Geneva College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Geneva guard Tim Sawyer is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-1 junior from Porterville, CA paced the Golden Tornadoes to a pair of wins at the Embry-Riddle Tournament in which they rallied from double-digit, second-half deficits in both games.

Sawyer scored all 20 of his points in the second half of a 82-78 victory over host Embry-Riddle. He netted 18 points during a 77-72 win versus NAIA Division II No. 23 Flagler.

For the week, Sawyer shot .357 from the field but made 15-of-16 free throws for a .938 accuracy. He added nine rebounds, five steals, and an assist.

Tony Washam, Saint Vincent College
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Saint Vincent guard Tony Washam (New Castle, DE) has been named the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. He paced the NAIA Division II No. 21 Bearcats to a pair of wins by averaging 24.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

Washam, a 6-foot-7 junior, scored 28 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in a 104-54 victory over Penn State-Beaver. He tossed in 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in an 85-73 win versus NAIA Division II No. 14 Shawnee State.

Washam shot .485 from the field and .600 at the line. He added 8 assists, 4 blocks, and 3 steals.

Mugabe Thomas, Cedarville University
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville forward Mugabe Thomas (Kingston, Jamaica) has been named the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. He is the first player chosen for the 2003-04 season after leading the NAIA Division II No. 3 Yellow Jackets to a pair of victories against AMC North Division members.

Thomas, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, posted back-to-back double-doubles. He had 20 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals in a 110-90 victory against Geneva. He added 21 points, 12 boards, and four steals in a 91-75 decision over previously unbeaten Daemen. Thomas shot .536 from the field and .667 at the line.
