2005 Players of the Week

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Rio Grande outfielder Charlie Kabealo (Rockbridge, OH) and Mount Vernon Nazarene pitcher Mike Laughlin (Mogadore, OH) have been named the AMC baseball Players of the Week.

Kabealo, a 6-foot-2 senior, batted .538 with a home run and five RBI’s as Rio Grande rallied to win their AMC Tournament Qualifier series at Malone two games to one. After the Redmen dropped the opener, 14-6, he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in a 13-3 victory. Rio won the third game 18-16 in 10 innings with Kabealo going 5-for-6 including the game-winning homer, three runs scored, and four RBI’s.

Laughlin, a 6-4 sophomore righthander, was 1-0 in two appearances with a 1.13 ERA for Mount Vernon Nazarene. He capped off the Cougars’ sweep of Seton Hill in the AMC Tournament Qualifier series with a three-hitter in a 14-1 victory. Coupled with one inning of work versus NCAA Division III No. 4 Wooster, Laughlin allowed one earned run in 8.0 innings on four hits with seven K’s and three walks.

Kyle Peters, Mount Vernon Nazarene (position)
Matt Bonin, Cedarville (pitcher)

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene shortstop Kyle Peters (Mason, OH) and Cedarville pitcher Matt Bonin (Patton, PA) have been named the AMC baseball Players of the Week.

Peters, a six-foot junior, batted .500 during MVNU’s 8-0 week which allowed the Cougars to extend their winning streak to 12 in a row. He recorded 11 hits in 22 at bats with three doubles, a home run, and five runs batted in. Peters also walked seven times and scored eight runs.

Bonin, a 6-1 junior lefthander, was 2-0 on the mound with two complete games and a 0.69 ERA. He allowed an unearned run on three hits in an 8-1 victory over Urbana before surrendering six hits in an 8-1 decision versus Shawnee State. Bonin, who fanned nine batters and walked six, owns a 6-3 record which is half of Cedarville’s 12 victories.

Ryan King, Point Park (position)
Jon Barchus, Mount Vernon Nazarene (pitcher)

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Point Park outfielder Ryan King (San Diego, CA) and Mount Vernon Nazarene pitcher Jon Barchus (Crestline, OH) are the AMC baseball Players of the Week.

King, a 5-foot-10 senior, batted .600 as the Pioneers split four games versus Geneva during the week. He was 9-for-15 at the plate with a double, triple, and seven RBI’s. King walked twice and scored four runs.

Barchus, a 6-2 senior, allowed one earned run in an 8-3 victory over Knox County rival NCAA Division III Kenyon in a non-conference tilt. He struck out five with no walks while giving up five hits.

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Seton Hill second baseman Brandon Whitfield (Pittsburgh, PA) and Mount Vernon Nazarene pitcher Mike Laughlin (Mogadore, OH) are the AMC baseball Players of the Week.

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Seton Hill second baseman Brandon Whitfield (Pittsburgh, PA) and Mount Vernon Nazarene pitcher Mike Laughlin (Mogadore, OH) are the AMC baseball Players of the Week.

Whitfield, a six-foot sophomore, paced Seton Hill to a 5-2 week by hitting .536 with three doubles, four triples, and nine RBI’s. He recorded 15 hits in 28 at bats, including six multi-hit games, to go along with 10 runs scored, two walks, and three stolen bases. Whitfield was 6-for-8 in a doubleheader sweep versus AMC North Division foe Walsh.

Laughlin, a 6-4 sophomore righthander, did not allow an earned run while going 2-0 including the 13th no-hitter in Mount Vernon Nazarene history. He opened the week with a complete-game 5-2 win versus Urbana in which he gave up two unearned runs on four hits with strikeouts and three walks. Laughlin then tossed a five-inning, 15-0 no-hitter at Cedarville in which he faced just 17 batters with six K’s and two walks.

(April 4-10)
Chad Lahna, Walsh (position)
Andy Steiner, Walsh (pitcher)

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh teammates Chad Lahna (Lafayette, OH) and Andy Steiner (Green, OH) are the AMC baseball Players of the Week. They guided the Cavaliers to a 6-2 week with four of those victories coming in North Division play.

Lahna, a 5-foot-9 senior outfielder, batted .545 with two doubles, a triple, three homers, and 12 RBI’s to earn the award for position players. He recorded 12 hits in 22 at bats with eight walks and 13 runs scored. Lahna hit .750 in his last five games and posted a 1.136 slugging percentage for the week.

Steiner, a 6-2 senior righthander, was 2-0 and did not allow an earned run in 10 innings pitched covering appearances versus North Division foes Geneva and Notre Dame. He struck out seven and walked three while surrendering six hits total.

(March 28 - April 3)
Andy Bourquin, Malone (position)
Jake Poole, Mount Vernon Nazarene (pitcher)

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Malone first baseman Andy Bourquin (Canton, OH) and Mount Vernon Nazarene pitcher Jake Poole (Wadsworth, OH) are the AMC baseball Players of the Week.

Bourquin, a 6-foot-3 senior, hit .667 in a doubleheader sweep over AMC North Division foe Notre Dame. He went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI’s in both games with a double, a home run, and three runs scored.

Poole, a 6-2 sophomore lefthander, picked up a win and a save in two relief appearances for Mount Vernon Nazarene. He pitched two scoreless innings with no hits and one strikeout to get the victory in a 7-6 decision at Ohio Wesleyan. Poole was credited with a save in a 6-5 win over Tiffin after allowing one hit with a strikeout in two innings.

(March 21-27)
Arnaldo Rodriguez, Ohio Dominican (position)
Kurt Thompson, Tiffin (pitcher)

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Ohio Dominican third baseman Arnaldo Rodriguez (Cidra, Puerto Rico) and Tiffin pitcher Kurt Thompson (Temperance, MI) are the AMC baseball Players of the Week. They are the first selections for the 2005 campaign.

Rodriguez, a 5-foot-9 junior, batted .545 as the Panthers opened AMC South Division play by sweeping a pair of doubleheaders from Urbana. He was 6-for-11 with a double, home run, and seven runs batted in. Rodriguez posted a .909 slugging percentage, scored at least one run in each game, walked three times, and stole a base.

Thompson, a 6-6 junior, hurled a no-hitter in a 12-0 Tiffin victory at Siena Heights. In seven innings pitched, he struck out three batters and walked one.
