2004-05 Players of the Week


(Feb. 20-26)
Robert Whaley, Walsh
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh center Robert Whaley (Benton Harbor, MI) has been named the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-10 senior scored 38 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the NAIA Division II No. 9 Cavaliers' 77-75 setback at No. 4 Saint Vincent in the AMC Championship Game.

Whaley made 17-of-25 shots from the field and converted 4-of-5 free throws. It was the most points scored by a Walsh player in 20 years.

Benji Hall, Mount Vernon Nazarene
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene forward Benji Hall (Mansfield, OH) is the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 24.5 points to lead the Cougars to a pair of road victories which locked up a first-round home game in the AMC/NAIA Qualifying Tournament.

Hall knocked down a career-high four three-pointers and scored 22 points with four assists in a 94-82 win at Malone. He set a new career-high with six treys en route to 27 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high four blocks in a 99-86 victory at Urbana.

For the week, Hall shot 56 percent from the field overall, including 10-for-16 shooting outside the arc for 62.5 percent, and he hit 9-of-12 free throws for 75 percent. He totaled 13 rebounds, seven assists, four blocks, and one steal.

Tony Washam, Saint Vincent
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Saint Vincent guard Tony Washam (New Castle, DE) has been selected the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-7 senior averaged 31.5 points per game to lead the NAIA Division II No. 6 Bearcats to a pair of victories over Daemen which allowed them to clinch the AMC North Division title.

In the first game at SVC, Washam recorded a triple-double of 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 87-80 victory. Then, in a 96-95 overtime win at Daemen, he came off the bench due to illness and exploded for 38 points and seven rebounds.

Washam shot 55 percent from the field for the week, hit 5-of-6 three-pointers for 83 percent, and made 70 percent of his free throws. He also had 11 assists, six steals, and four blocks.

(January 30 - Feb. 5)
Tim Sawyer, Geneva
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Geneva guard Tim Sawyer (Porterville, CA) is the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-1 senior averaged 22.3 points to lead the Golden Tornadoes to a 3-0 week, including two AMC North Division victories, and scored the 1,000th point of his career.

Sawyer began his week with 18 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals in a 125-116 shootout victory over longtime rival and NCAA Division III Westminster. He scored 23 points in a 91-84 win versus Houghton and knocked down 26 points during a 91-78 victory against Daemen.

Sawyer made 57 percent of his field goals including a 7-for-12 accuracy outside the arc for 58 percent. He was also 12-for-13 at the free throw line for 92 percent to go along with totals of 17 rebounds, 13 assists, seven steals, and a blocked shot.

Daniel George, Seton Hill
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Seton Hill center Daniel George (Brisbane, Australia) has been chosen the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. He was also selected the NAIA Division II National Player of the Week. The 6-foot-10 junior had three consecutive doubles to average 21.7 points and 12.7 rebounds in three AMC North Division victories for the Griffins.

George recorded 23 points and 13 rebounds in a 85-61 victory over Geneva; 16 points and 10 boards in a 86-65 win at Houghton; and 26 points with 15 rebounds in a 77-74 victory at Roberts Wesleyan.

George shot 56 percent from the field for the week and converted 17-of-21 free throws for 81 percent. He added six blocks and five assists.

Rob Whaley, Walsh
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh center Rob Whaley (Benton Harbor, MI) has been chosen the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-10 senior averaged 23.3 points and eight rebounds in leading the NAIA Division II No. 18 Cavaliers to a 3-0 week and sole possession of first place in the AMC South.

Whaley posted a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds in an 82-72 win versus Ohio Dominican; netted 21 points with six boards as the Cavs ended Daemen’s 23-game home court winning streak, 91-87; and then poured in a career-high 29 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 82-68 decision over No. 5 Cedarville.

For the week, Whaley shot 60 percent from the field and 65 percent at the free throw line. He added five assists, four blocks, and two steals.

Mugabe Thomas, Cedarville
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville forward Mugabe Thomas (Kingston, Jamaica) is the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-4 junior posted back-to-back double-doubles while averaging 20.5 ppg and 13 rpg in two victories for the NAIA Division II No. 5 Yellow Jackets.

Thomas scored 22 points with 13 rebounds in a 104-72 win against Urbana. He also had 19 points and 13 boards in a 88-76 decision at No. 21 Ohio Dominican.

For the week, Thomas shot 54 percent from the field overall, including a 3-for-4 accuracy outside the arc, and made 44 percent of his free throws. He also produced four assists, four steals, and a blocked shot. His 11 double-doubles this season rank second in the country in NAIA Division II.

Mark Hess, Mount Vernon Nazarene
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene center Mark Hess (Ashland, OH) has been named the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-6 sophomore averaged 22.7 points and 8.3 rebounds during the Cougars’ 2-1 week.

Hess finished his week with a career-high 33 points, including two free throws with 28.8 seconds left, and nine rebounds in a 76-75 upset over NAIA Division II No. 3 Cedarville. He also had 16 points and nine boards in a 82-57 win versus Wilberforce as well as 19 points and seven rebounds in a 66-64 setback to Walsh.

For the week, Hess shot 56 percent from the field and 75 percent at the free throw line. He added five steals, four assists, and a blocked shot.

(December 26 - January 1)
Tony Washam, Saint Vincent
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Saint Vincent guard Tony Washam (New Castle, DE) is the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-7 senior was also tabbed NAIA Division II National Player of the Week after averaging 38 points and 12.5 rebounds as the Bearcats split two games at the Palm Beach Atlantic Classic.

Washam opened with 37 points and 15 rebounds in a 109-104 overtime win versus Bethel IN. He added 39 points and 10 boards in a 92-86 setback to NCAA Division II Palm Beach Atlantic.

For the week, Washam shot 52 percent from the field overall, 39 percent outside the three-point line, and 72 percent at the charity stripe. He also contributed 10 assists, seven steals, and a blocked shot.

Chris Miller, Malone
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Malone guard Chris Miller (Sugarcreek, OH) has been named the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 5-foot-11 sophomore led the Pioneers to the Muskingum Tournament championship by averaging 20.5 points per game.

Miller scored 26 points, including a 15-for-15 effort at the foul line, in a 90-79 victory over Houghton. He netted 15 points as Malone scored the final eight points of the contest to beat host Muskingum, 70-69, in the championship game.

For the week, Miller shot 40 percent from the field overall, 44 percent outside the arc, and he converted 17-of-18 free throws for 94 percent. He added six rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Shane Conwell, Malone
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Malone forward Shane Conwell (Stow, OH) is the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-5 senior exploded for a career-high 46 points in a 120-114 overtime victory against Ohio Dominican during an AMC South Division contest.

Conwell made 14-of-24 shots from the field including 4-for-12 from three-point range. He converted 14-of-15 free throws to go along with five rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Conwell’s 46 points was one point shy of the AMC record.

Rob Whaley, Walsh
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh center Rob Whaley (Benton Harbor, MI) has been chosen the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-10 senior averaged 24.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks with back-to-back double-doubles to lead the Cavaliers to two victories.

Whaley tallied 20 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks in a 66-64 victory over NAIA Division II No. 18 Saint Vincent. He piled up 29 points, 15 boards, and five rejections during a 70-68 win versus Notre Dame. Whaley shot 44 percent from the field and converted 11-of-15 free throws for 73 percent.

(November 28 - December 4)
Daniel George, Seton Hill
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Seton Hill center Daniel George (Brisbane, Australia) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-10 junior averaged 25.7 points and 10.3 rebounds during the Griffins' 2-1 week.

George racked up 29 points and 12 rebounds in a 94-73 AMC North Division victory over Notre Dame; scored 24 points with 15 rebounds in a 85-66 setback at Ohio Dominican; and netted 24 points in an 85-80 win at Urbana.

For the week, George shot 71 percent from the field, including a 2-for-2 showing outside the arc, and he hit 61 percent of his free throws. He also had six assists, three blocks, and a steal.

Shane Conwell, Malone
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Malone forward Shane Conwell (Stow, OH) has been selected the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-5 senior averaged 27 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Pioneers split two games at the Palm Beach Atlantic Tournament in Florida.

Conwell opened with 28 points and seven rebounds in a 83-76 setback to the host Sailfish. He came back with a double-double consisting of 26 points and 10 boards in a 99-88 win versus Flagler. Conwell shot 48.5 percent from the field overall, 35.3 percent outside the three-point line, and converted 16-of-18 free throws for 88.9 percent. He added three steals and one assist.

Tim Sawyer, Geneva
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Geneva guard Tim Sawyer (Porterville, CA) is the AMC men’s basketball Player of the Week. He averaged 23.3 ppg while pacing the Golden Tornadoes to a 2-1 week which included two wins over nationally-ranked teams at the Huntington Classic championship.

Sawyer opened with 22 points in a 103-102 overtime setback to Nyack. He bounced back with 20 points and four assists in a 97-89 victory over NAIA Division II No. 9 Siena Heights and then poured in 28 points in a 92-90 decision at No. 3 Huntington.

For the week, Sawyer shot 50 percent from the field and was 9-of-19 outside the arc for 47.4 percent. He converted 17-of-21 free throws to go along with 10 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.

(November 7-13)
Mugabe Thomas, Cedarville
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville forward Mugabe Thomas (Kingston, Jamaica) has been the first AMC Player of the Week in men's basketball for 2004-05 season. The 6-foot-4 junior averaged 22.7 points and 13.3 rebounds in leading the NAIA Division II No. 4 Yellow Jackets to a 3-0 start.

Thomas scored 22 points with a career-high 17 rebounds in an 83-82 season-opening victory at NAIA Division I Campbellsville KY. He was named MVP of the Cedarville Invitational after scoring 18 points with 12 rebounds during a 78-74 win versus Aquinas, and he matched his career-high with 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds in a 102-79 victory over Wilberforce in the final.

Thomas shot 61 percent from the field overall and was 4-for-7 outside the three-point line. He added seven steals, seven blocks, and two steals.
