2006-07 Players of the Week


(Feb. 5-11)
Donald Suel, Ohio Dominican
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Ohio Dominican guard Donald Suel (Columbus, OH) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-2 sophomore guided the Panthers to a 2-1 week by averaging 21 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Suel racked up 27 points and seven rebounds in a 76-67 victory at Tiffin. He totaled 21 points, six boards, and three assists in an 84-83 decision over Malone before finishing his week with 15 points in a 74-61 setback to No. 4 Walsh.

For the week, Suel shot 41 percent from the field overall and 60 percent outside the arc. He drained 28-of-31 free throws for 90 percent to go along with 17 rebounds, six assists, three steals, and a blocked shot.

Ben Falkenberg, Mount Vernon Nazarene
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene guard Ben Falkenberg (Wadsworth, OH) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 5-foot-10 sophomore averaged 29.5 points to pace the No. 12 Cougars to two victories and vaulted them into a tie for first place in the AMC South Division.

Falkenberg hit six treys and fired in 26 points during a 91-82 victory at Malone. He buried five more three-pointers and netted 33 points in a 94-80 decision over Rio Grande. Falkenberg shot 39 percent overall from the field for the week, hit 46 percent of his three-point shots, and made 14-of-15 free throws for 93 percent. He added four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

Adam Lesch, Walsh
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh forward Adam Lesch (Newark, OH) has been named the AMC Player of the Week in men's basketball. The 6-8 junior averaged 18.5 points per game to help the NAIA Division II No. 5 Cavaliers extend their winning streak to 15 in a row with two more victories.

Lesch had 12 points and five rebounds as Walsh gutted out an 82-77 overtime win at Urbana. He then piled up 25 points, eight boards, and four assists in a 77-70 victory against No. 15 Cedarville to keep the Cavs in sole possession of first place in the AMC South Division.

For the week, Lesch shot 54 percent from the field and 82 percent from the line. He is 48 points shy of reaching 1,000 for his career.

Ben Falkenberg, Mount Vernon Nazarene
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene guard Ben Falkenberg (Wadsworth, OH) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 5-foot-10 sophomore averaged 28.5 points per game in two victories for the NAIA Division II #11 Cougars, who extended their winning streak to 10 straight.

Falkenberg recorded 14 points and five assists in an 80-59 win at Ohio Dominican. He finished the week by erupting for a career-high 43 points in a 97-76 victory against Wilberforce in which he set conference records for most free throws made (19) and attempted (22) in one game. Falkenberg shot 54 percent from the field for the week, 38 percent outside the arc, and 83 percent at the free throw line. He added 10 assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

Ryan Short, Cedarville
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville guard Ryan Short (Springfield, OH) has been selected the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-2 junior averaged 23 points per game as the NAIA Division II No. 20 Yellow Jackets put together a 3-0 week.

Short opened with 19 points and nine rebounds in a 93-90 overtime victory at Shawnee State. He came back with four three-pointers and 26 points in an 89-85 overtime win versus NCAA Division II Central State before finishing the week with 24 points and six assists in a 77-72 decision against Ohio Dominican.

For the week, Short made 53 percent of his shots from the field overall including a 7-for-15 showing for 47 percent behind the arc. He also made 12-of-17 free throws for 71 percent to go along with 18 rebounds and 10 assists.

Eder Araujo, Walsh
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh center Eder Araujo (São Paulo, Brazil) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The seven-foot junior averaged 21 points and 13.5 rebounds to help the NAIA Division II No. 11 Cavaliers extend their winning streak to nine with two league victories.

Araujo tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 101-63 romp over Urbana before racking up 25 points and 17 boards in an 85-66 decision against Ohio Dominican. He made 17-of-25 field goals for the week for 68 percent, including 4-of-6 three-pointers, and hit 4-of-5 free throws. He added four blocks, one assist, and one steal.

(December 25-31)
Ben Falkenberg, Mount Vernon Nazarene
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Mount Vernon Nazarene guard Ben Falkenberg (Wadsworth, OH) has been named the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 5-foot-10 sophomore, who was also selected the NAIA Division II National Player of the Week, averaged 38 points per game to lead the NAIA Division II No. 22 Cougars to a pair of victories.

Falkenberg poured in a career-high 39 points in a 77-71 win versus NAIA Division I Biola at the Grand Canyon Classic followed by a 37-point performance in a 121-83 victory over Hanover. He shot 63 percent from the field for week, hit 12-of-21 three-pointers for 57 percent, and made all 12 of his free throws to go along with five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.

Falkenberg leads the AMC in scoring (25.4 ppg) and free throw percentage (.945). He is averaging 37.7 ppg in his last three games.

Ben Carver, Malone
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Malone guard Ben Carver (Shelby, OH) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The six-foot junior averaged 22 points per game in a pair of victories for the Pioneers.

Carver scored 18 points and dished out five assists in an 89-79 non-conference win versus Myers. He poured in a career-high 26 points with six rebounds during a 102-90 victory at AMC South Division foe Urbana.

For the week, Carver shot 56 percent from the field overall, drained 8-of-11 three-pointers for 73 percent, and converted 18-of-19 free throws for 95 percent. He totaled nine rebounds and eight assists for Malone, who has won five straight games.

(December 11-17)
Adam Lesch, Walsh
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh forward Adam Lesch (Newark, OH) has been named the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 21 points and 9.3 rebounds to pace the NAIA Division II No. 18 Cavaliers to a 3-0 week.

Lesch exploded for a career-high 28 points and matched his career-high of 13 rebounds in an 85-78 win versus No. 14 Saint Francis IN. He netted 22 points with nine boards in a 92-68 victory over Daemen to avenge an earlier 17-point loss to the Wildcats. He then totaled 13 points and six rebounds in a 109-66 romp over Virginia Intermont.

For the week, Lesch shot 60 percent from the field and converted 21-of-24 free throws for 88 percent. He added four assists, three blocks, and two steals.

Chivas Whipple, Point Park
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Point Park guard Chivas Whipple (Youngstown, OH) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week after leading the undefeated NAIA Division II No. 8 Pioneers to three more victories. The six-foot junior averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 57 percent from the field and 91 percent at the charity stripe.

Whipple scored 16 points with 15 rebounds in a 115-71 rout at Franciscan. He came up with another double-double of 21 points and 10 boards during an 84-82 win at Malone and then exploded for 38 points and eight rebounds in an 87-73 victory against NAIA Division I Saint Francis IL. Whipple added six steals, five assists, and four blocks in the three games.

(November 27 - December 3)
Brandon Weems, Walsh
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh guard Brandon Weems (Akron, OH) has been chosen the AMC Player of the Week in men's basketball. The 5-foot-10 junior averaged 11 points and 10.5 assists to spark the NAIA Division II No. 7 Cavaliers to a pair of AMC South Division victories.

Weems dished out 12 assists to go along with nine points, six rebounds, and three steals when Walsh rallied from a 19-point deficit to beat No. 14 Mount Vernon Nazarene, 79-55. He produced 13 points, nine assists, seven boards, and two steals in a 98-90 victory over Rio Grande. Weems played all 40 minutes of both games.

(November 20-26)
Kyle McDermott, Geneva
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Geneva forward Kyle McDermott (Jamestown, NY) is the AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The 6-foot-7 junior averaged 23 points and 5.3 rebounds during the Golden Tornadoes' 2-1 week in which he became the 33rd player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points.

McDermott made 12-of-16 shots and scored 30 points in an 82-69 win versus Penn State-Beaver. He totaled 17 points and seven rebounds in a 52-47 setback to Taylor in the first round of the Anderson Tournament. He then made all nine of his field goal attempts and scored 22 points with five blocks in a 124-63 rout of Indiana-East in the consolation game.

For the week, McDermott was 28-of-39 from the field for 72 percent and 13-of-19 at the free throw line for 68 percent. He recorded 16 rebounds, 10 blocks, six steals, and one assist.

Daniel Rose, Cedarville
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville center Daniel Rose (Ochio Rios, Jamaica) is the AMC men's basketball player of the Week. He averaged 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in two wins for the 4-0 Yellow Jackets in their own invitational after which he was tabbed Tournament MVP.

Rose, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, produced 22 points and six rebounds in an 84-74 victory against Bryan. He had 18 points, 12 boards, and three blocks during a 76-63 decision over Daemen in the championship game. He shot 68 percent from the field and 61 percent at the charity stripe.

Chivas Whipple, Point Park
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Point Park guard Chivas Whipple (Youngstown, OH) has been selected the first 2006-07 AMC men's basketball Player of the Week. The six-foot junior paced the NAIA Division II No. 23 Pioneers to a 2-0 week by averaging 26 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Whipple racked up 27 points and 14 rebounds in a 91-73 victory against West Virginia Tech and produced 25 points and seven boards in a 102-79 win at Rio Grande. He shot 55 percent from the floor and made 14-of-15 free throws for 93 percent for the week. Whipple was tabbed the Rio Grande Tournament MVP.
